Where to stay in Los Cabos

From the marina in Cabo San Lucas to the quiet beaches of the East Cape, here is how the main areas compare, and which of our homes are in each.

Los Cabos is the municipality at the southern tip of Baja California Sur. Its two towns, Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, sit roughly 30 kilometres apart, joined by a coastal highway known as the Tourist Corridor. Where you stay shapes the trip as much as the home you choose.

Cabo San Lucas

Marina & boat tripsRestaurants & nightlifePedregal hillside

Cabo San Lucas is the busier of the two towns. Its marina is the departure point for most yacht charters, sportfishing trips and whale-watching outings, and the streets around it are full of restaurants and bars. Land's End and its rock arch lie just offshore.

Above the marina, the gated neighbourhood of Pedregal climbs the hillside, with homes looking out over the bay and a few on the Pacific beach beyond. It is a favourite with groups who want privacy without being far from town.

The coastal highway between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo is lined with resorts, golf courses and gated residential communities, many of them overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Staying here puts you between both towns, usually a short drive from either.

Close to Cabo San Lucas, Punta Ballena is a gated oceanfront community with its own beach club. Further east are Cabo del Sol and, at the San José end, Palmilla.

Cabo del Sol is a large gated community on the Corridor, a short drive east of Cabo San Lucas. It is best known for golf, with residential neighbourhoods on the hillsides above the sea and resort hotels along the shore. Hillside homes here typically trade direct beach access for wide ocean views.

At the San José del Cabo end of the Corridor, Palmilla grew up around one of the region's first resorts and is now a gated community of estates and villas, with golf, tennis, shops and restaurants close at hand. Palmilla Beach sits in a sheltered bay that is popular for swimming and paddleboarding when conditions allow.

Our Palmilla homes are spread across several enclaves: Caleta, Palmilla Norte, Palmilla Cove and the Villas del Mar resort community.

San José del Cabo is the municipal seat of Los Cabos and the more traditional of the two towns, with a historic centre around its plaza and mission church, art galleries and a relaxed dining scene. It is also the closest town to Los Cabos International Airport.

Beachfront areas such as El Encanto sit within easy reach of the centre.

FAQ

Choosing an area

Still deciding? Tell us about your trip.

Which part of Los Cabos is best for a first visit?

It depends on the trip. If restaurants, nightlife and boat trips are the priority, Cabo San Lucas or Pedregal keep you close to the action. For a calmer stay near the airport, Palmilla, San José del Cabo and Puerto Los Cabos are popular. The Corridor sits in between.

How far apart are Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo?

The two towns are roughly 30 kilometres apart along the coastal highway. Driving time varies with traffic and the time of day, so ask us for current advice when planning dinners or excursions.

Which beaches are good for swimming?

Ocean conditions change with the season and swell. Sheltered bays on the Sea of Cortez side, such as Palmilla, are generally calmer, while many Pacific-facing beaches near Cabo San Lucas have strong surf and currents. Always check local beach flags and ask our team about the beach nearest your home.

Which area is closest to the airport?

Los Cabos International Airport is closest to San José del Cabo, Puerto Los Cabos and Palmilla. Cabo San Lucas and the East Cape are further away. We can arrange private transfers from any area.

Do you have homes on the East Cape?

Yes. Villa Bahia de los Frailes is a six-bedroom beachfront home on Frailes Bay, just south of Cabo Pulmo. Because the area is remote, we recommend planning transportation and groceries in advance.

Can you help with transportation between areas?

Yes. Our team can arrange private airport transfers and transportation around Los Cabos, subject to availability. See private transportation.
